Dove - a variety of currants - was obtained as a result of crossbreeding in 1942. And to this day, this one is considered one of the popular varieties of blackcurrant.
Currant Dove belongs to the early ripening and early maturing variety. Harvest will be possible in late June or early July. With proper care of the plant from one bush, you can collect a record 5 kg of crop. The bushes are not tall, but powerful and medium spread. The bush is densely covered with green leaves. A photo (Fig. 1) of the variety of black currant Dove is presented below.
The variety is very demanding on watering and soil composition. Shoots of currant slightly lowered and curved. Berries on the brush are densely arranged. The average brush length is about 5-7 cm. The berries themselves are not very large. The taste is not sugary sweet, but with a slight sourness. Due to the fact that the flesh is soft and the skin is thin, the berries are wrinkled and poorly transported.
The disadvantages of the variety include weak immunity to the effects of bud mites and powdery mildew. A detailed description of the variety allows you to understand whether currants are able to give a good crop in your garden conditions. To collect a good harvest, you must properly care for the plant.
How to care for black currants
Basic currant care consists of:
- regular watering;
- fertilizing the soil;
- loosening the soil;
- bush trimmings;
Currant bush should be regularly watered, especially in windy and dry weather. Watering is best in the evening, so that moisture can get to the root system overnight.
On average, under one adult bush of currant, you need to pour 2-3 buckets of water. During watering, do not allow water to get into the center of the bush. Because water falls into the gaps of the stems, and with the advent of cold weather it freezes, which further leads to the death of the bush. Watering must be done around the crown, so a small hole should be made along the perimeter of the bush.
Currant: variety selection
Watering the currant is necessary until the ovaries appear on the plant. In this case, excessive moisture affects the taste of the berries and leads to their cracking.
An important role in the care of currants is given to loosening the soil. The soil under the bush should always be in a loose state. In spring, soil can be mulched. To do this, you can use peat or moss.
In some cases, the soil is mulched with newspapers. And this has its advantages. During the formation of the green cone and isolation of the kidneys, the newspaper will not allow insect pests to leave the soil after wintering, and it also prevents the evaporation of moisture. But during the flowering period, newspapers need to be removed. Instead of a newspaper, you can lay a special covering material made of agrofibre.
The key to a good harvest is high-quality and timely top-dressing of the soil.
During the period of active shoot growth, blackcurrant variety Dove needs nutrients. Top dressing can be both mineral and organic. It is necessary to fertilize in such a way that the radius of the fertilized earth is slightly larger than the radius of the crown. In spring, it is best to fertilize currants with nitrogen fertilizers, and in autumn - potash or phosphorus. Bushes need to be fed every year.
Why prune currants
The competent pruning of the plant also affects the fertility of the bush and the taste of the berries. If the rules of watering and top dressing are observed, and currants are not happy with the crop, then, most likely, the bush needs pruning.
Trimming the currant bush is best in spring. Gardeners identify several situations when you need to carry out this procedure. If the branches of the bush began to grow inside, then in the future they will only thicken the bush and negatively affect the fertility of the plant. Therefore, such branches should be pruned in a timely manner.
When the root shoots stop growing, then in this case it is necessary to shorten several branches by 1/3 of the total length. If such a procedure has not yielded results, then it is necessary to cut a few weak branches to the ground. To restore the balance between the root system and the aerial part, you need to get a new basal shoot from the ground.
Blackcurrant variety Dove at the age of 5-6 years should have about 12-15 shoots on the bush. To achieve this, you need to regularly trim the old stems. Old shoots do not actually bear fruit, so they need to be replaced with young ones. To do this, shoots are removed at the very root.
Spring pruning should be based on the results of last year’s growth. If the shoot is weak, then in this case you need to cut off the upper part of the twig to the place where the strong top is located.
Diseases and treatment of blackcurrant
Most often, powdery mildew forms on the black currant of the Golubka variety. This disease is caused by a fungus that hibernates on fallen fruits or leaves of a plant. As a rule, powdery mildew appears by mid-summer. A white coating forms on the berries. Over time, the mycelium becomes brown and dense. The affected bush is significantly stunted. If the plant is not provided with timely assistance, then this can lead to loss of yield and in the future to the death of the bush.
At the first manifestations of the disease, the bush must be sprayed with copper sulfate or a solution of soda ash. Processing should be carried out every 10 days. Currants can also be treated with infusion based on rotted hay or peat.
The most dangerous pest of the Golubka currant is a tick. If you do not fight it, the bush will significantly weaken and will not bring a crop. Its presence can be determined by deformed leaves and shoots that are much behind in growth. Berries, not reaching full maturity, fall off. The kidneys are of different sizes.
How to plant blackcurrant
How to deal with it? Currant bush must be treated with preparations based on colloidal sulfur. It is also necessary to remove the affected kidneys, and if the tick is severely damaged, whole branches should be cut.
